The state of Tennessee, in cooperation with the federal government has set up the medicaid program in the state. The medicaid program is run by the federal government and administered in the state of Tennessee under the name of TennCare.

Although the medicaid program is run on the federal level as the US insurance company, it is administered on the state level. It was established in 1965 in order to help low income families and individuals to be able to afford proper medical care.
