The state of Louisiana takes part in the medicaid program in order to help families and individuals with low incomes to receive adequate medical help. It has helped thousands of people, especially with the trouble that the state has had with natural disasters.

The federal government established the medicaid program under the social security act to help with medical expenses where there was a need. Although the federal government is in charge of the program, it is up to the individual states to administer the funds. At this time every state in the US participates in the medicaid program.
